Listening Mastery Guide
The CEFR Listening test assesses your ability to understand spoken English in various social and academic contexts. It consists of 6 Parts va 35 questions.
Part 1: Picture Matching
Format: You will hear a description and must match it to the correct picture (A, B, or C).
Strategy:
- Scan the images first: Look for differences. Is one person holding a pen while another holds a phone?
- Listen for distractors: The speaker will likely mention objects from all pictures, but only one description will match fully.
Part 2: Reply Selection
Format: You hear a question or statement. You must choose the best response (A, B, or C).
Strategy:
- Focus on the WH- word: (Who, What, Where, When). If the question is "When...", the answer must be a time.
- Check the tense: If the question is "Did you go...", the answer should be in the past tense.
Part 3: Short Conversations
Format: A conversation between two people. Answer a multiple-choice question about details or opinion.
Strategy:
- Read the question before listening: You have 10 seconds. Use it to identify what you need to listen for (e.g., a price, a reason, a location).
- Listen for synonyms: The speakers often use different words than those in the options.
Part 4: Map/Diagram Labeling
Format: Label a map or diagram based on audio instructions.
Strategy:
- Orient yourself: Find the starting point (e.g., "Main Entrance") immediately.
- Follow the "pen": Trace the path mentally or with your finger as the speaker gives directions.
- Listen for prepositions: "Next to", "Across from", "Just past" are critical cues.
Part 5 & 6: Long Monologue/Interview
Format: Longer speech or interview with gap-fill or multiple matching questions.
Strategy:
- Predict word types: For gap fills, guess if the missing word is a Noun, Number, or Adjective before listening.
- Signposting: Listen for "Firstly", "On the other hand", "Finally" to know when the speaker moves to the next point.
